Rosie and Family

I was booked for this 40 minute photo shoot in Compton Abdale by Rosie and her family, who had hired a house for a long weekend. They were having a bit of a family reunion and wanted a photographer to capture some photos for them. We began with a few group shots before moving onto more natural ones of the children. It was extremely hot so we kept to the shade as much as possible, which helped balance the lighting.

This 20 minute family photo shoot took place in Kemble, towards Cirencester. Mum and Dad wanted pictures of mainly the children, with a few family ones to include themselves. As always, the shoot was relaxed and informal, with the emphasis on having fun, which helps everyone to relax.

Batsford Arboretum

I was booked by Lexi and her family for a 60 minute session at Batsford Arboretum. It’s a glorious spot with plenty of fab places for photos. The brief was a mixture of formal family pictures and some more natural, candid ones of the children. Thomas in particular wasn’t shy about having his photo taken, while Amelia proved more of a challenge! The rain held off just long enough to get a great set of pictures for the family.

Rosie

I met lovely Rosie, her Mum and Nan at a local woodland just outside Gloucester. It’s one I go to every year as the bluebell display is simply stunning. It’s very flat under foot too which makes it ideal for little ones to ramble around. Walk through the woods and it opens out on to a beautiful vista which adds another dimension to the photos.

We all had a super fun time, Rosie loved playing peek a boo from behind the bluebells and swings in the air from Mum were also a hit!

The Apple Barn

April is shaping up to be another busy month with lots of family and on location shoots. This 40 minute shoot was in the beautiful Cotswold countryside with a family who had hired a house for the weekend to celebrate a birthday. I was at Batsford Arboretum recently for a family on location shoot, and what a fantastic place! I’ve never shot there before so it was a real treat to go somewhere different. The focus was on a nice selection of family portraits of little Eveline and her Mum and Dad. Despite the drizzle, there were smiles all round as we utilised the beautiful magnolias and daffodils.

The Dursley Family

Sheila contacted me recently to enquire into one of my 60 minute on location shoots. It was her husband’s 60th and their families were staying in a large Cotswold cottage for the weekend, just near the racecourse.

When I arrived the haze was still thick, but lifting. It created a wonderful atmosphere. The children were all a little older than my usual clients, apart from Orla! It’s always good to work with a variety of different ages, particularly teenagers. Trying to get them enthusiastic about having their photo taken can be a challenge, but with some clever tricks and quirky suggestions the photos always come out great.

I’m very fortunate that in my job I get to record many happy family occasions such as birthday parties, christenings and weddings. It’s not always the case though, some shoots, like this one, carry a bit more weight behind them, which means documenting the moment becomes even more important. It’s tricky as a photographer to find the right balance between helping the family feel at ease and not coming across as making light of the situation. It was a rather quick twenty minute shoot I understand the family are very pleased with the results.

Westonbirt

I’d never been to Westonbirt Arboretum before so it was a real treat to be able to go there for a photo shoot. Mum, Helen, had booked a 40 minute session for her family - daughters, Amy, Abbie and Erin, her husband Simon and their dog, Cooper.

I met them just inside the entrance and I suggested we head over to the bridge walk for some photos. It was rather spectacular and took a few minutes to get a clear shot without other people in the background.

On exiting the bridge we made our way over to the woods. The girls had an impromptu play so I took a step back and subtly captured the fun. Attention very quickly turned to leaf throwing and the whole family got involved, even the dog!! All in all a really fun shoot with some beautiful backdrops.

Below is just a small selection of photos. As with all my 40 minute plus shoots, all pictures are included in the price. I think this particular family received over twenty images, all of which they were very pleased with.

Sarah contacted me recently as she wanted to book a family photo shoot to celebrate her Mum’s 70th birthday. The family had hired a house for the weekend and I arrived on the Saturday morning for a 60 minute session.

I take a very informal approach with all my photo shoots. After a few group photos I encouraged family members to get involved playing with the children. I much prefer these more candid types of shots as everyone is able to relax a little more and that sense of fun really comes across in the photos.

Theo and Albie

I was booked by Theo and Albie’s Dad, Tim, for a 90 minute photo shoot to capture some natural pictures of the grandparents with the two children. Both sets of grandparents live in the States and were over in England visiting for a month.

We began with a few formal family photos before letting the children get on and do what they do best - play! Big brother Theo was keen to show me how he catches damsel flies while his baby brother Albie giggled away as the long grasses tickled his feet! Their Mum helped raise a few smiles with her impressive range of farm animal noises!! Sadly my photos can’t record noise because they’d have had you in stitches almost as much as the rest of us!! The photo shoot was performed in their back garden. Here are a few of my favourite shots.

Joint 170th Celebrations!!

This two hour on location family photo shoot from took place at the Cotswold Water Park where the family were renting a house. They were celebrating a joint 40th, 60th and 70th. We started with a few formal family photos in the garden then headed over to the playground before rounding it off with a biking session and cake! Here are a few of my favourites.

Minnie and Sophie

This time around we were on Selsley Common. It’s not an area I’ve photographed before but it’s a location I’ll be sure to return to! Despite the rather blustery conditions we ventured out onto the common. The grey clouds provided a magical light that really set off the colours in the long grass, which the girls loved crawling through trying to find the Gruffalo!! We then took shelter in among an old quarry.

This 60 minute family photo shoot took place in Moreton-on-Marsh at a house the family had rented for the weekend. They were keen for less posed shots and more natural photos so I made a few suggestions about how we might be able to achieve that.

As with all my photo shoots, it was lots of fun and the children in particular felt it was more like one big play session than a professional photo shoot! I think that is the best way to approach this sort of thing though. If everyone is having a great time and smiling and laughing lots then that energy will come across in the photos. Here are some of the highlights.

The Lynch Family

It was another busy day last Sunday. I had a Baptism in the morning followed by a mini park shoot in Pittville and then finally, I was booked to cover this 50th wedding anniversary. These types of photo shoots, where the family hires a Cotswold cottage for the weekend, are becoming increasingly popular. I get a lot of bookings of this nature. This country residence was simply stunning and the family, (and their dogs) were good fun too!

The brief was formal family photos followed by more candid pictures. They also wanted photos of their dogs too. On my arrival everyone was still getting changed so we joked that we would start with the dogs, seeing as they were ready!! Here are just some of the highlights.

The Confetti Fields Cont.

Last Tuesday I was at the Confetti Fields in Pershore for back to back photo shoots with families keen to get some beautiful pictures of their children in amongst the gorgeous flowers.

The delphinium fields are only open for two weeks every year and they can get very busy. I chose a weekday to avoid the crowds. There wasn't not much shade either, but luckily there was a good breeze that day, which helped to take the heat out of the sun.

It was lovely to meet all the children. After my first three photo shoots with the younger ones, my next two were a little older. First up was Taya, who loved giving her teddy a cuddle, throwing bunches of delphinium flowers in the air, which her Mum had bought from the shop, and enjoying snuggles with her Mum. Max was my only boy of the day and he was a cool customer dressed in his hat and shades!

The Confetti Fields

Last Tuesday I was at the Confetti Fields in Pershore for back to back photo shoots with families keen to get some beautiful pictures of their children in amongst the gorgeous flowers.

It was lovely to meet all the children. My first subject was little Elsie, who was so gentle she just loved exploring the flowers. Twins, Poppy, Reeva, loved looking at the butterflies and baby Henrietta was so little, all she could do was lie on her tummy and look cute!

A 50th Wedding Anniversary

A couple of weeks ago I was booked to cover a 50th wedding anniversary with Emma and her family. The photo shoot took place in her parent's back garden and what a beautiful sunny afternoon it was too.

Cindy and Bob were married 50 years ago to the day and were excited to be able to celebrate with their two young grand children, Lauren and Jake. The brief was to capture a large group photo of the whole family and some more natural, candid ones of the children.

Rufus, Seth and Miles

I was booked for this 60 minute family photo shoot in Leckhampton by Howard and Rebecca who wanted some up to date pictures of themselves and their three young boys, and what super fun they were too!

The brief was to capture some shots of the family inside and out. There were two photos in particular that Howard and Rebecca wanted to try and create and that was a shot of each of them with their youngest son, Miles. When the older two were born they had some black and whites done with them and they wanted to complete the collection.

The boys were a bundle of giggles as they played ball and chased each other round the garden. As with all my photo shoots, this one was very relaxed and informal. I often like to leave children to play and enjoy themselves as I find this gets the best results and captures their characters and personalities.
